FiveM vs RAGE:MP: Platform Differences and Migration
By RPScripts
FiveM is the better choice for a new GTA V server or player in 2026. RAGE:MP announced on 25 May 2026 that, at Take-Two's request, it is winding down, with end of support set for 31 August 2026. FiveM is run by Cfx.re, which has been part of Rockstar Games since August 2023, and it operates under Rockstar's Creator Platform License Agreement.
This comparison uses the official pages of both platforms, Rockstar and Cfx.re, checked on 2 November 2026. It contains no performance benchmark. Disclosure: RPScripts sells resources for FiveM servers, and nothing for RAGE:MP.

Is RAGE:MP or FiveM better?
FiveM is the better option because it is the platform Rockstar supports and RAGE:MP has announced its own end. A platform that is winding down cannot promise updates, security fixes or a server list for your community.
Before May 2026 the answer depended on your team's languages and preferences. Licensing has since settled it. We have no measured evidence that either platform runs faster, so this article makes no performance claim.
Is RAGE:MP shutting down?
Yes. In a forum announcement dated 25 May 2026, the RAGE:MP team wrote that Rockstar Games and Take-Two consider FiveM the only authorized platform for GTA V multiplayer modding, and that RAGE:MP would begin a structured shutdown at Take-Two's request. The announcement set these steps:
- From 25 May 2026, no new community servers are accepted and public access to the server toolkit is discontinued.
- By 1 June 2026, the public server listing shuts down. Existing owners keep builds through the Server Manager.
- By 31 August 2026, remaining community servers are expected to stop. After that date the client and server toolkit are no longer available or supported, and the backend is to be permanently shut down.
When we checked on 2 November 2026, rage.mp still offered its client download and showed servers online. A community thread from 10 October asks the team whether the shutdown was postponed and had no official reply. We found no official notice withdrawing the May announcement. Do not plan a new project around it.
Who owns FiveM, and does Rockstar allow it?
FiveM belongs to Rockstar Games. On 11 August 2023, Cfx.re announced, and Rockstar's Newswire confirmed, that the team behind FiveM and RedM had officially joined Rockstar. The fivem.net footer now names FiveM a trademark of Take-Two Interactive.
Rockstar's Creator Platform License Agreement, last updated 10 September 2026, names FiveM and RedM as its Creator Services. It requires a valid entitlement to a covered Rockstar game and sets rules for server operators, including bans on real-money cash-out mechanics, paid loot boxes and selling in-game currency for real money.
What happened to alt:V?
alt:V, another GTA V multiplayer platform, has already shut down. Its official homepage notice says so, and reporting on the team's announcement describes end of support and a planned backend shutdown on 6 July 2026. Our article on the alt:V shutdown and moving to FiveM covers the timeline and migration preparation. With RAGE:MP also winding down, FiveM is the platform Rockstar authorizes for GTA V multiplayer modding, as the RAGE:MP announcement itself states.
Scripting languages and server software
Which languages does each platform use?
FiveM resources run in Lua, JavaScript or C#. RAGE:MP's wiki documents server-side Node.js, client-side JavaScript and .NET C# on both sides. Shared languages help, but events, entity handling and APIs differ.
What do you run on the server?
FiveM uses FXServer on Windows or Linux, optionally managed through txAdmin, and requires a free license key registered on the Cfx.re Portal. RAGE:MP's server, ragemp-server, also runs on Windows or Linux, but the team discontinued public access to its toolkit in May 2026.
Frameworks and ecosystem
FiveM has established roleplay frameworks: ESX, QBCore and Qbox each publish their own documentation. Our framework buyer's guide explains how to choose one around the resources you need, and Qbox compared with QBCore covers the newest fork. Rockstar's license agreement also covers an official marketplace where server owners acquire resources. We found no audited resource or server counts for either platform, so this article gives none. The fivem.net homepage shows a live player counter; treat it as a snapshot.
Can I move a FiveM server to RAGE:MP?
No, not as a new project. RAGE:MP stopped accepting new community servers in May 2026 and ended public toolkit access.
Can I move a RAGE:MP server to FiveM?
Yes, but expect a port rather than a copy. Cfx.re's migration guide for other GTA V multiplayer platforms lists differences in entity creation, ownership, dimensions (FiveM uses routing buckets), RPC, colshapes and the Mono-based C# runtime. RAGE:MP's announcement says the Cfx.re team offered to answer migration questions.
- Export the databases and source code you control, and record your current versions and configuration.
- List every integration point: events, RPC calls, colshapes, dimensions, voice and permissions.
- Choose a framework and port one complete gameplay flow on a test server.
- Import copies of accounts, characters, inventories and money, then compare record counts and samples.
- Move players only after the test server passes, and keep the original exports.
Do you need to pay for FiveM or RAGE:MP?
You need to own GTA V on PC for both. Neither homepage lists a price for its client, and the FiveM server license key is free. Hosting and paid resources are separate costs. The guide on how to play FiveM on PC walks through installation and joining a first server.
Who should pick which?
Players and new server owners should pick FiveM. Teams still running RAGE:MP should keep their exports safe and plan a tested FiveM migration now, since the announced end of support has passed. Choose RAGE:MP only to keep an existing server running briefly while you migrate, and only through the access the team still provides.
Frequently asked questions
Is RAGE:MP dead?
Its team announced end of support for 31 August 2026. Parts of the site still worked on 2 November 2026, without an official update on the timeline.
Will FiveM get my GTA Online account banned?
Cfx.re's FAQ says no: FiveM does not interact with Rockstar online services beyond validating your game copy at first launch, and it does not modify your game files.
Can I play FiveM on a console?
No. Cfx.re's FAQ says a console version is not feasible because FiveM depends on the open PC platform.
